La Grande Case dans la Chefferie traditionnelle des Grassfields
La Grande Case dans la Chefferie traditionnelle des Grassfields is part of the Tentative list of Cameroon in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List.
This serial site consists of 14 “Grandes Cases” of the traditional chiefdoms of the Grassfields region. The chiefdoms constitute a series of architectural complexes of power, with the “Grande Case” as its most important building. The “Grande Case”, which has different names in different chiefdoms, is a sort of sacred palace-temple or house of the people with various uses, depending on the chiefdom, and represents a centuries-old royal civilisation. It reflects a certain political, spiritual and architectural homogeneity and shows the simultaneous use of architecture and artistic knowledge and artisanry (e.g. sculpture).
